<text><span class="style6">nimals+Sound 1.0</span><span class="style1">Freeware HyperCard 2.0 (or later) stack by Ralph Gonzalez. This stack attempts to reduce the frustrations small children (as young as 1 year old) often encoun- ter when they begin interacting with a computer. When the </span><span class="style3">Small Kids Mode</span><span class="style1"> button is checked, only a mouse click is required to navigate one page at a time through the collection of animals, and extra clicks and key presses (except the spacebar and arrow keys) are ignored. The </span><span class="style3">Hide Desktop</span><span class="style1"> button helps prevent inadvertent application switching. For very young children I recommend an adult hold the mouse while the child presses the button.The artwork in this stack was obtained from freeware collections. I’m not sure of the original source for scanned images, and apologize if any are copyrighted!</span><span class="style7">Adding New Pictures and Sounds</span><span class="style1">You can add new pictures and sounds to this stack as follows. To add a picture, simply find the point in the stack where you want to append a new card and select </span><span class="style3">New Card</span><span class="style1"> from the menu. Then you can </span><span class="style3">Paste</span><span class="style1"> the picture from the </span><span class="style3">Clipboard</span><span class="style1">. Alternately, if it's in a MacPaint file you can select one of the painting tools from the tool palette and then choose </span><span class="style3">Import Paint</span><span class="style1"> from the menu. You should then choose </span><span class="style3">Select All</span><span class="style1"> and then </span><span class="style3">Transparent</span><span class="style1"> from the menu, to make sure the arrow keys show through when </span><span class="style3">Small Kids Mode</span><span class="style1"> is off.If you have the HyperCard Development Kit you can add a new sound by opening the </span><span class="style3">Audio Help</span><span class="style1"> stack. This will append the </span><span class="style3">Audio</span><span class="style1"> item to your </span><span class="style3">Edit</span><span class="style1"> menu. Now open </span><span class="style3">Animals+Sound</span><span class="style1"> again and select </span><span class="style3">Audio</span><span class="style1"> from the menu to show the </span><span class="style3">Audio Palette</span><span class="style1">. When you record a new sound the corresponding Snd resource is automatically added to your stack and a new button (which plays the sound) is created. Select the button tool from the tool palette and delete this new button. (The Snd resource remains attached to the stack.) Next, use the button tool to select and </span><span class="style3">Copy</span><span class="style1"> one of the (transparent) buttons already in place over the existing animal pictures in the stack. Be sure to copy a button which produces sound, rather than one which performs an animation. </span><span class="style3">Paste</span><span class="style1"> the button over your picture and drag the corners so that it covers the image. Double-click the button (still using the button tool) to see its options, and select </span><span class="style3">Script</span><span class="style1">. (If </span><span class="style3">Script</span><span class="style1"> is grayed out you may have to change your userlevel. Choose </span><span class="style3">Message</span><span class="style1"> from the menu and type: </span><span class="style8">set userlevel to 5</span><span class="style1">. Note that you can only type in the message box when viewing this information card, since otherwise all key presses are ignored.) Change the name of the sound resource to match your new sound, in the second line of this script. (Some of the buttons play the sound twice, so you may want to edit your script if necessary.) Now choose the pointer tool (finger) again and try it out!To add an existing Snd resource (rather than one recorded with the </span><span class="style3">Audio Palette</span><span class="style1">), first put the Snd resource into this stack using </span><span class="style3">ResEdit</span><span class="style1"> or (a little safer!) the </span><span class="style3">Resource Mover</span><span class="style1"> in the </span><span class="style3">Power Tools</span><span class="style1"> stack which comes with the HyperCard Development Kit.</span><span class="style7">Adding New Animations</span><span class="style1">You can also add a new animation, as follows. Choose </span><span class="style3">message</span><span class="style1"> from the menu and type: go card "butterfly animation"Now choose </span><span class="style3">Copy Card</span><span class="style1"> from the menu. </span><span class="style3">Paste</span><span class="style1"> the card (preferably after the card you're planning to animate), give it a new name according to what picture you're animating, and put a new picture in the card. Note that these cards have a different Background from the other cards, and cannot be accessed using the arrow keys (instead use </span><span class="style3">Next</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style3">Prev</span><span class="style1"> from the menu, or type: go card "xxx", into the message box). You next copy the button from the original butterfly picture and paste it over the original picture which you wanted to animate. Change the second line of its script so when the button is clicked it goes to the animation card you just created. It will automatically return you to your original card after 1/2 second.</span><span class="style7">Creating New Stacks</span><span class="style1">Come to think of it, you should be able to follow these steps to create entirely new stacks of clickable pictures, like </span><span class="style3">Transportation+Sound</span><span class="style1"> (trains, airplanes, etc.), </span><span class="style3">Familiar Faces</span><span class="style1"> (scanned pictures of your relatives speaking a greeting), etc. In this case you should delete or modify the 'vers' resource using </span><span class="style3">ResEdit</span><span class="style1"> or </span><span class="style3">Resource Mover</span><span class="style1">.
